  • In mid-1990s, he was a part of the small General Electric Headquarters litigation group that established "Early Case Assessment", which has since been replicated by almost every major corporate law department.
  • Litigation partner at major global law firms, including Mayer Brown and Dentons. Selected as a “NY Super Lawyer” for patent litigation and international arbitrations of commercial disputes. 
  • Tried over 40 cases and arbitrations to conclusion, and achieved overwhelmingly successful results. Achieved several settlements in excess of $100 million.
  • Settled hundreds of cases. Never settled a case in which he represented a plaintiff corporation and settled for less than the legal fees, out-of-pocket expenses and a recovery for the plaintiff corporation.
  • Clients included Samsung, General Electric, Hyundai and GlaxoSmithKline.

Denis R. Salmon, Investment Committee Member

For more than 30 years, Denis served as lead counsel for technology companies in the Silicon Valley and throughout the United States in the trial of cases involving high stakes intellectual property issues.

  • Previously a litigation partner with Gibson Dunn & Crutcher, LLP, where he served as Co-Chair of the firm’s Intellectual Property Group and as Partner in Charge of the Palo Alto office.
  • Denis has been ranked by numerous publications, including Chambers USA, the Legal 500, IAM Patent Litigation 250, Super Lawyers, Law Dragon, BTI Client Service All-Stars, and the Daily Journal, as one of the leading intellectual property lawyers in the United States.
  • His patent and trade secret litigation experience includes significant cases involving wireless communications, software, internet and medical device technologies, among others.
  • He has appeared before federal courts in dozens of jurisdictions, including the International Trade Commission and has argued before the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
  • Denis served as Chair of the pro-bono organization Silicon Valley Campaign for Legal Services and has received the Guardian of Justice award from the Legal Aid Society of San Mateo County.
  • Before joining Gibson Dunn, Denis was a partner in the law firm of Brobeck Phleger & Harrison, where he served as founder and head of the firm’s Palo Alto litigation group.
  • He received his law degree, magna cum laude, from the University of Minnesota law school.

Barry J. Mandel, Investment Committee Member

Barry has over 40 years of experience in handling a wide variety of complex high profile, civil, criminal, arbitration and regulatory matters. Tried over 40 regulatory, criminal, civil, employment and arbitration cases.

  • Retired Partner with Foley & Lardner LLP, where he was the head of the firm’s Securities Enforcement and Litigation Practice.
  • Prior to joining Foley, Barry served as Senior Vice President and General Counsel for Global Litigation at Merrill Lynch & Co., Inc. where he managed all litigation, investigative matters, and supervised over 75 lawyers, paralegals, and other personnel. Personally handled Merrill Lynch’s largest, most sensitive and most complex regulatory, criminal and civil matters.
  • Prior to joining Merrill Lynch, Barry was a partner at Baer Marks & Upham and responsible for litigation (securities, commodities and employment discrimination) and regulatory investigations (securities and commodities) as well as white collar defense of commodity tax fraud investigations and trials.
  • Securities Exchange Commission – staff attorney and chief attorney in Branch of Enforcement, New York Regional Office.

Julian B. Caprow, Chief Financial Officer

Julian is a seasoned business and finance executive with small and large company experience.

  • Julian was EVP and CFO of a real estate company and completed the IPO with a listing on the NYSE.
  • Previously, Julian’s experience included Bear Stearns (SVP of real estate investment banking), Citibank (VP of Real Estate Investment and Management), Ford Motor Company, and Standard Oil of Indiana (BP).
